If I were asked to describe Kazantzakis, I would not find the right words…
What is certain is that he was a man of free spirit and sharp mind… Every one of his works sends many distinct messages, and his gift is beyond comprehension… I discovered him when I was 25, first reading “Christ Recrucified”… I loved him immediately… In my opinion, and in the opinion of many others, Kazantzakis should certainly be taught in Greek schools. Asceticism is the philosophical work of N. Kazantzakis, and no matter how many times you read it, you always discover something new… In this specific book one also finds the most characteristic phrase of N. Kazantzakis:
“I know now. I hope for nothing, I fear nothing, I have been freed from mind and heart, I have climbed higher. I am free… I want nothing else. I was seeking freedom!” How many other phrases included in Asceticism have made me want to become as good a person as I can... “Never acknowledge the boundaries of man. Break the boundaries!” “Love responsibility. Say: ‘I, I alone have the duty to save the earth. If it is not saved, I am to blame...’” “Do not deign to ask: ‘Will we win?’ ‘Will we be defeated?’ FIGHT” “I choose the uphill road because that is where my heart drives me. Upward! Upward! Upward! my heart cries, and I follow it with trust…” To those who have not yet “met” him, I recommend him without reservation…
