I have endured the policies of many governments, from the so-called "metapolitefsi" until now, while remaining unaffiliated.
I experienced Athanasios Kanellopoulos's "objective presumptions" through to GAP's "extraordinary levies" taxing non-existent income, and I tried to understand the logic of politicians who supposedly aimed for the people to prosper and the country to progress.
As time passed, I realized that only those with a specific political alignment prospered, regardless of ideology. Those who maintained direct or indirect communication with the holders of power and with the opposition, who were waiting to receive the so-called "ladle", advanced, gained recognition, and acquired unbelievable financial comfort without working.
I saw professionals without skills and people without a profession prospering with party devotion and political patriotism as their equipment.
I learned that countless people grew rich from commissions, quick grabs, and kickbacks at the expense of the public sector.
Others cashed in their party identity through appointments as prefects, ministry general secretaries, and heads of public enterprises or organizations, without qualifications, without ethos, without honor, and without morality.
I saw petty lawyers sent to the European Parliament to disgrace us, as happened with the head of the "youth" of the Karamanlis party.
I saw a trade-union woman of the lawyers' salons take over the general secretariat of the Ministry of Labor, and other unionizing legal men run tourism enterprises and co-organize, not without payment, Olympic Games. What did I not see...
I watched the social and economic rise of crowds of incapable, uneducated, ruthless, and amoral people who maintained a connection with some planted figure of the left, center-left, or right.
I saw professors raised under the junta, thanks to their Ovidian transformations, serve in the courts of amoral prime ministers while teaching democratic ethos. Now they judge, criticize, and condemn, declaring that when they received salaries from the rulers and lived with glory and honors, they had been misled and have now repented like Magdalene figures. That is why they brazenly display their cunning faces at every opportunity, so that we may admire them...
I had understood that to progress in Greece one had to prove party devotion, or claim to have been harmed, even in one's sleep, by the junta, or to have carried out real or imaginary resistance against it, inside or outside Greece, even if one collected junta funds, as happened with the most brazen of the "ethnarchs", who left us his entire clan to feed so that it could govern us: two nephews, one a prime minister and the other a minister, a brother who was a minister, and a host of blood relatives, in-laws, intimates, friends, worshipers, and hangers-on.
With real or false titles of resistance to the military regime, an endless multitude appeared, including the junta's applauders who had chameleon-like abilities and specialized in serving on Papadopoulos's "advisory committee" and then in the parliaments of Karamanlis, Papandreou, Mitsotakis, and Simitis.
Together with me, the whole of society saw insignificant, talentless, irrelevant, and careerist people being promoted, leaving hovels and settling with their families in the northern suburbs, as in the Koutsogiorgas case, or in other extremely expensive areas of Attica and the center of Athens, as in the Tsochatzopoulos case.
The rabble that wandered idly around Europe and the ends of the earth arrived to support the "metapolitefsi" and, in order to help us, took on staffing the old and newly created ministries in exchange for fat salaries, immunities, and privileges.
The relatives of the "old man of democracy", children, grandchildren, nephews, daughters-in-law, and countless others, in noble rivalry with the relatives of the "ethnarch", the signer of the Zurich and London agreements, devoted their abundant time of idleness and unemployment to staffing positions as prime ministers, ministers, and rulers of the so-called "Hellenic Republic".
All these people acquired prestige, honors, worshipers, fanatically devoted supporters, and above all enormous fortunes, capable of feeding many generations of unemployed descendants for many years.
The children and descendants of our rulers attended the best and most expensive schools, inaccessible colleges, and famous universities of the USA and Europe, acquired credentials and audacity greater than their parents', and returned to govern us: the generation of the Mitsotakis family, with honorary leader, deputy, minister, and mayor, the Varvitsiotis family, and the other non-exempt feudal lords.
All of them, sharing audacity, insensitivity, greed, and incompetence, had the constant, willing, and fanatical support of the majority, which on every occasion expressed adoration for them, the blue-bloods of the left, center, and right, filling squares and streets by the hundreds of thousands and millions with screams, plastic flags, giant posters, marches, cheers, silly songs, and inarticulate cries of faith and devotion, such as "you are our father", "go on, go on, the whole country wants you", "change, change, popular participation", and other barking.
The vision of the supporters was stable and unchanged: to collect money, acquire goods and property, a city home and a country house, two, three, or more cars for each family member, to be settled and live without working, effortlessly, retiring before old age with a lump sum and a pension for a comfortable life, in exchange for fanatical support of the feudal lords who gladly sat on our neck like parasites and leeches, together with their relatives, cronies, and hangers-on.
Our rulers, the blue-bloods of parties and splinter groups, apart from their performance in grabbing, embezzling, and getting rich, filled various institutions of idleness that we call "universities" with equally incapable careerists.
These, in turn, appointed themselves "university professors", filled bookstores with useless books made from translated copies, preferably of foreign works, became famous through their television chatter, and worst of all forced the truly gifted and talented to emigrate in disgust.
When the crisis appeared, or more accurately when the last borrowed and unrepaid money ran out, "as if by magic" the hundreds of thousands and millions of supporters of plunder were transformed into "indignant democratic citizens" who demonstrate every day, occupy buildings, burn and destroy public and private property, and protest angrily because politicians deceived them...
They pollute the Acropolis and mutilate works of art, close schools, chase tourists and immobilize ships, uproot businesses, and organize televised trials, cursing everyone except themselves...
Not a day passes without corrupt politicians being disgraced. The majority of supporters and clappers has now turned into a majority of protesting fighters for acquired rights.
The "people" are presented as a concept of holiness, purity, and morality, supposedly misled and deceived, for compensation of course.
Former and current deputies of parties and splinter groups preach revolution against their fraudster colleagues, expressly exempting themselves.
Society is boiling, and the judiciary cannot keep up with persecuting and imprisoning, unlawfully, unrelated and uninvolved people, even clerics, in order to show that it functions, always incorruptibly and objectively, while prosecutorial censors suddenly discovered that "something is rotten in the kingdom of Denmark", exhausting their medieval severity on old people, the helpless, the young, and the maimed.
Yet something strange is happening, something I did not understand all these years. How can the same people, the overwhelming majority, fanatically support, participate as accomplices, taste the goods of plunder, collect money without working, commit crimes, march together with the political fraudsters and rabble they themselves chose, and within a short time suddenly turn, like a weather vane in the wind, attack their own chosen ones, insult them, become indignant, protest, and revolt, forgetting the plastic flags, party alignments, illegal appointments, false pensions, the collection of European subsidies with forged data, and all their other crimes?
Perhaps I did not understand that I live in the Balkans. That I must convince myself I have no relation to civilization and progress as long as I insist on belonging to a society of decline, destined to die before the advance of the determined and strong whom we contemptuously call "illegal immigrants".
It seems, and this I understood, that the future belongs to other peoples, the newcomers.
We are being lost in the mire of lawlessness and the erratic behavior of the majority of our compatriots who ...suddenly came to their senses. They imitate the junta professors who disguised themselves as advisers to democratic parties and then wore the costume of repentance in their new transformation, that of opponents of the memorandum and German-eaters...
Otherwise this contradiction cannot be explained, a contradiction identical with schizophrenia: the very same people who cheered and participated now become indignant and protest, as if whatever happened in our country was not due to their own choice, votes, and alignments, and did not concern or touch them...
I finally understood that our people have lost their orientation, virtues, ideals, traditional values, and ideology, and are staggering, destined for total destruction and final disappearance. Unless...
